How to engage your employees in water efficiency

 In Museums, Water

If you are involved with running a Museum, you’ll be well aware of how key water efficiency is. Taking steps to use water in the most efficient way has several advantages for museum administrators. Firstly, it will help you to work in a more environmentally friendly way and manage your energy usage better. Secondly, it will reduce consumption and save you money. This makes it a real winner for all museums, especially when paired with an overall energy management strategy.

Some museums may find it easier said than done, though! Becoming more water efficient will only happen if you and your staff are fully engaged with the process.

But how do you go about doing this?

Education

By far the best thing to do is talk to them and explain why using water more efficiently is important. If they all understand why you are bringing this kind of policy in, they will be far more likely to engage with it. When doing this, you should also provide staff with a clear set of instructions on how they can save water in their daily working roles, as well as in their private lives.

Make it easier for them

One great way to really get your staff involved is to make it as simple as you can for them. Many museums will do this by purchasing water-efficient equipment. These energy efficient types of equipment do the same job but simply require less water to operate. A common example of this could be the dishwasher you have in your staff canteen.

Signage

Your staff are only human: you still need to give them a little push to help along the way. A great way to do this is by posting signs up in relevant areas. If you find that taps are left dripping in the toilets, for example, you could place some there as a reminder. It can also be worthwhile sending out an e-mail addressing water efficiency to staff now and then to help.
